TWILIGHT OR HALF DAY · FOR MFL TEACHERS
Engagement in the Languages Classroom
Behavioural, emotional, cognitive and social engagement in MFL
Why this course?
Engagement is usually judged by how busy a class looks, which tells you very little. This session unpicks what it actually means: whether pupils participate, whether the work feels relevant to them, whether they are thinking hard, and whether they are interacting in the target language. The focus is on how we engage pupils, not how much.
What you'll learn
- The four types of engagement: behavioural, emotional, cognitive and social
- Routines that lift participation and effort without raising the volume
- Making tasks feel relevant so pupils genuinely want to attempt them
- Designing activities that make pupils think hard rather than just stay busy
- Structured interaction that gets every pupil talking, not just the confident ones
